Promotion to higher duties

This blog outlines my accomplishments to-date and my readiness for higher duties at Navitas Professional Services. Below is a list of my achievements so far:

  • Received commendation from 5 clients regarding my diligence and perseverance in handling complex inquiries
  • Assisted in creating a valuable and frequently used customer comment system
  • Established strong, positive working relationships with all members of staff
  • Organised 2 team lunches in the last 3 months
  • Integrated an online team forum so team members can post questions, information etc.
I will also outline my top 3 important qualities and how it will help me perform my higher duties.

Active listening skills

I have strong listening skills which have allowed me to create strong interpersonal relationships with my colleagues. By listening with purpose to my teammates' ideas and opinions, I am able to forge a positive environment with the people around me. Many staff members have commented on my listening skills, mentioning that it allows them to feel included and heard, further creating an active and supporting workspace.

Empathy

Along with strong listening skills, my ability to show empathy to others have been particularly useful in times of conflict. By putting myself in their shoes, I'm able to relate to how people are feeling, and leverage these emotions to connect deeper with my colleagues. This has also resulted in more meaningful conversations with my peers, and when conflict arises, displaying a level of empathy has allowed me to alleviate the pressure, allowing others to calm down and actively regulate their emotions. My strength of empathy has allowed my peers to rely on me for help or support - something that I am proud to contribute.

Ability to stay calm under pressure

When conducting higher duties, this means the workload would increase, resulting in greater pressure. This is something that I can manage as I have developed skills to remain calm under stress. For me, by simply taking the time to calm down and look at things from a bigger picture, I'm able to control the stress, focusing my energy on completing my tasks at hand. Also, one way of regulating stress is by "hacking" my mind and converting a stressful reaction into a more positive one. This is something that I am still improving on.

To summarise, I believe that I would be a great candidate for this promotion as I possess the appropriate skills and qualities to manage a larger team and perform higher duties. My active listening skills, empathy and ability to stay calm has made me a valuable member of my team. I believe that by continuing my professional development, I can strive to hone these skills more, working towards becoming a well-rounded leader.

Agile vs Waterfall Models

What is the Waterfall Model? The Waterfall model is suitable to use when project requirements are well-defined and understood, and changes within the project are small and limited. Advantages of using Waterfall is that there is thorough documentation and a clear structure. As a result, it requires less management coordination as every detail of the project is already planned beforehand. The model relies on a clear sequence of events however it can be seen as an inefficient management approach. This is because the model is difficult to adapt the project when changes arise. For example, if a client decides to change a major component of the project, the Waterfall model would be deemed ineffective, wasting time and resources.  Further, the Waterfall model is extremely strict in its structure. It follows a linear formula and if a single deadline is missed, then the future product releases can be massively affected. Waterfall also makes it difficult to obtain user feedback and product v...
